OUTFIT - spring & skirts !

Spring tomorrow so I thought I would do a slightly more summery look as I hope the nice weather will stick around, although I highly doubt it knowing wellington weather! It’s stupid how excited I am for summer, its months away yet  I am already making plans for trips away and meeting up with people I haven’t seen in ages as I will have three months of during summer break!!! No doubt I will make time for opshopping as well!

This is another 100% opshopped outfit; I have been wearing a few lately. I don’t know why but it always seems to feel like an accomplishment. Weird huh? I bought the skirt a while ago from Salvation Army for $8.00, I loved the fabric – I have a thing for floral prints on black, I find it minimizes the femininity which I quite like. Lately I haven’t been able to get enough of this skirt! Same with the top, the pattern is so lovely and such a bargain for $4.00! I already get the feeling I am going to wear it to death over summer.

NEW OBSESSION ~ textured tops

This post is to confess my new obsession with textured tops. When I say textured tops, I am referring to lace, crochet velvet etc. I think the reason why I have been so in to these top lately is because they are a really useful piece to mix patterns with. I really love the look of having a billion different patterns and textures in an outfit but it’s such a fine balance to get it right. I personally find it’s much easier and wearable to mix a bold print and detailed but plain coloured textured top. You still get the effect of pattern just without the added hassle of colour and working two strong prints together.

I also just wanted to point out the fact that the very first top is from a retail store. I wanted to include this in the post so you can see the comparison in quality and the overall look. I understand that not everyone is keen on second hand garments and some things you would never even look at buying second hand. But I honestly think that this sort of top is better when bought in an opshop. First off there are so many of them in store thanks to the recycling of trends from generation to generation, plus them seem to have a vintage vibe that makes them seem less tacky that retail ones that every store seems to have in a different colour.

What’s your opinion on this?  So you prefer the retail top (first one) or the others?

D.I.Y ~ Charm Bracelet To Necklace

This is pretty much the world’s easiest D.I.Y, but in my opinion had a great end result. Minimum effort is required which is always a win in my book. I acquired this lovely charm bracelet from my mum and I personally think it’s a really nice one, the charms themselves are all New Zealand themed and vintage looking – which of course I am rather fond of.

As for the actual D.I.Y, you literally grab and old necklace chain (a shorted one works best for this), take the charm bracelet, line up the two opposite ends to get them match up with a clasp and loop on each side. Do up the clasps ….then you’re done. That simple!

NEW BAG + outfit

Yesterday I picked up yet another new bag! But for $1.00 I could hardly say no! Plus this bag is a handy size as most of mine are relatively small so I can’t fit much in them which can be a bit of a problem.  At first I thought the bag was leather which would have been a real score for such a low price but I am now pretty sure its vinyl – normally I hate fake leather, the stuff you see in retail stores looks like plastic and for me just doesn’t cut it. However on this particular bag the leather is all worn and battered so I’m not that bothered.

Not only is this bag bigger than my usual size but it also has a super wide gusset which makes it perfect for a book bag as I can stack them all up. Then again just in general it’s handy to have a bag that you can place items flat in.

As for the outfit, in case you don’t know, I live in New Zealand which in the southern hemisphere so we are starting to come in to spring. YAY! Therefore my outfits will be getting a little more summery. I have just rediscovered this dress (worn as a skirt) and I am in love all over again. I got it from supre of all places years ago! They lace top is just my usual one $4 from a red cross store and the denim vest is my own creation, I had a go a D.I.Y and un-picked the sleeves I actually did this a while ago but never wore it but now after trying it on again I am warming to it.

OUTFIT - New Maxi

This is just a quick post on what I was wearing today. I decided to go for a maxi skirt as yesterday I had a bit of an incident where I went to the beach in a short skirt. It was super windy. In my defence I thought I was only going to town, and then my friends decided lets jump on a random bus and head to the beach as you do…? We had a really nice time even though it was a tad chilly and I finally got to properly spend some time with friends German exchange student – they day before she left! Still it was really nice to meet her :)

I am in love with this outfit, it’s so comfy and I love wearing maxi skirts – this might sound kinda weird but there is just something about wearing them that makes me feel special? I think it’s the floor length fabric that swishes as I walk. Anyone else get that feeling? This must sound really strange?

As for the top, I have rediscovered it and I can’t get enough, the pattern is amazing and because it’s white it goes with everything so I have been wearing it non-stop. I really need to get more variety with what I wear especially as I have soooo many clothes now. If you’re a regular reader then you will see I am still wearing my new stone necklace. The excitement of picking it up for 50 cents still hasn’t worn off. I LOVE it.

I am in love with this song and can’t get it out of my head; I even spent my last couple of dollars on itunes to buy it.
(Just wanted to make a note that this song is relatively new in NZ – we can be kinda slow on the uptake when it comes to music so some of you may already know this song from months ago but its new to me.)

Miss me?

As you may or may not have noticed I did disappear for a little while. Blame my photography portfolio. Yesterday was hand in day so now its all over and I can relax a little till I have to hand in my design and art folios. Hopefully I will be able to get back to regular blogging, I have really missed it! And I have so many posts to do, especially on the things I thrifted last weekend, plus I went to a makeup sale the other day. I am officially poor now.

What $38.00 can buy you :

In case you couldn’t tell, I went opshopping today! I had some company for a change; yes normally I am that sad guy shopping alone. Not that it bothers me; I am perfectly fine with myself for company, personally I have never understood girls who can’t do anything alone?  Today my lovely friend Paula came with me as she often does. In the end we had three bags each. I even had to go and purchase some new coat hangers – I have too many clothes, it’s starting to get out of hand…

As you can probably tell from the title, everything in this post plus coast hangers came to a grand total of $38.00. I was pretty pleased with my efforts. Plus in a way it’s kind of like I donated that much to charity today. Warm fuzzies. I will go in to more detail on what I bought when the items pop up in outfits posts otherwise this would be suuuuuper long.

Also, I do realise that a few of the skirts are a tad ugly. I plan on cutting them up to make new skirts, I have a few DIY projects to complete.

It's actually verging on crazy how long I have been wearing this outfit! Its one of those old faithfuls I have been turing back to for over a year! And for some people that’s probably not a big deal, but for me it is. I have pretty much the worlds shortest attention span. I get bord of things super quick and I like to mix it up, so the fact I have stuck with this combo is impressive. For me what works so well with this outfit is the fact its so comfy. The top is amazing, warm enough to wear alone or you can layer it when it’s a bit colder and the skirt is just super simple and easy to wear.

Again, because I like to mix it up I thought I would share with you two of my favorite youtubers at the moment. These two are pretty well known and probably wont come as a surprise to most of you but I really enjoy both their channels – thrifting is a common theme in case you didn't notice! But they both do general style as well.

THE FASHION CITIZEN: ‘Two frugal fashionistas living in the dream in sunny Arizona’ Steph and Melissa have an amazing sense of style. The stuff they find thrifting is crazy! Super jealous. They also have killer D.I.Y videos.

CLOTHES ENCOUNTERS: ‘This channel is a hub where you can soak in your weekly taste of my style, people I find inspiring, and places I frequent.’  Jenn from clothes encounters also has a killer sense of style, on trend but with her personal own twist. I could watch her thrift hauls allll day. As well as style videos, she also posts day trip vlogs etc…

I thought I would do a photography update today for a change. Normally I update you all on my folio and how it’s going – It’s due in a week!! ONE MORE WEEK! I am starting to freak out a little, nearly half a years’ worth of work to hand in! These photos are actually some that I found on my computer from my last assessment I handed in – nothing to do with my folio but nice to see some different photos for a change.

Outfit: Jacket: thrifted $15.00, Top: thrifted $5.00, Skirt: Cotton On $10.00

As for the outfit, it’s what I was wearing last weekend. Just super casual, the weather has been really weird lately, on and off warm and cold. Crazy to think this time last year we were having a freak snow storm?!  Two more exams to go next week, art and economics - Well one really, we just go in and work on our designs for the art exam so it’s more relaxing than most which is nice for a change!
